No you were clear. I dont think you can make an extension without alot of wiring. Its the entire factory wiring harness for OEM radio that you would have to extend for convenience.
The controller has to get power somehow - maybe a toggle switch or connector for the 12v leads only, but spliced in series (so you're only extending the power source connections, not the entire harness)?

I understand what your saying now.

The initializing phase is only accomplished when disconnecting the OEM radio harness from the metra harness and resetting the CANBUS. I suppose this could be done by extending a 12v on a switch once that's identified. Metra customer service is actually really helpful and could probably answer this question.

I would try moving the CAN high and low wires off the harness to the OBD port with quick disconnects.

Stock headunit is on it's last leg, continually freezing and restarting itself. I had intended to replace all of it (no more Bose crap) eventually but I'm starting next week when my 8200NEX gets delivered I guess. Is the sound quality any better after replacing just the head unit? I'm planning on running the wires for a full build (2 sets of RCAs more or less) but won't be able to add anything else for a little while.

I didn't notice any sound quality differences, but a whole lot of user improvements

My AVH4200NEX was leaps and bounds better than stock. It really does need a speaker upgrade now...

My install and implementation of various things leaves a little to be desired. I.E. wiring for the factory USB as well as HDMI and such.

I believe now after seeing a couple different phone mounts I could run the cables for android auto as well as appradio differently.

I do have the factory AUX and USB functional. USB wired to USB1 on the head unit for my ipod. USB2 has a drop cable with HDMI and a MHL adapter for appradio.

I'll likely be switching from ipod to SD card here soon. So that's one less thing to worry about.

Alright, after 6 hours spread across two days, I'm about 90% done with my 8200NEX install. I'm gonna have to pull it out again to fix an alignment issue, but everything is at least functional now.

This isn't an easy install. I've installed aftermarket radios in every car I've owned over the last 15 years, and this was by far the most challenging due to the layout of the dash. Wiring is slightly more complicated than normal due to the various Axxess modules, but if you follow the instructions it's nothing too crazy.

The Metro kit is satisfactory. Cutting the dash trim was a pain primarily because my dremel is junk. I ended up rigging up my drill to finish the job because I'm pretty sure I burnt out the motor on my dremel.

Sound quality is definitely different. I've found that on some songs the sound quality of the highs is much improved, but anything with distorted bass reeks havoc on the poor little Bose speakers.

Some notes I'll add for those doing this in the future:

Make sure you reset your EQ and any other radio settings you want to carry over before removing your factory radio. Those settings are saved on the Bose amp and thus will persist even after swapping out the headunit.

Follow the instructions to a T.

Make sure you're equipped to handle cutting through 1/4" ABS plastic.

Anyone have experience running an Android head unit yet?
I want to go android so I can run torque straight off the HU without a phone. The only drawback is I can't figure out how to get Sirius to work with an android HU and the stock antenna.

Thoughts?

I run Android auto however I don't use mirrorcast with my 4100nex because it has never worked correctly. I used an iPhone for HDMI mirroring. I've read that you have to get the right phone for mirrorcast to work properly from the Android phone to the head unit.

My Note 4 seems to handle AppRadio mode quite nicely as far as getting it to work.

In practice however AppRadio mode is a giant pain in the fucking ass to use.

Technically all that you would need is an adapter of some sort to hook the stock antenna to the new Android head unit. Assuming the Android head unit was Sirius or XM ready.

Yeah appradio kind of blows. I HDMI mirror the iphone, use apple car play and Android auto. I never use the appradio portion anymore. Not user friendly

if I had a half a set of balls I would go through the process of hacking the head unit and installing torque directly on it.

Can you do this?

I've seen android head units but they're all from China. I want something that runs android on its own. I don't want to use a phone.

Not really, no. The stock HU runs Windows CE IIRC.

When I get some free time at work I'm intending to take a look at the HDD from my car. I'm a reverse engineer by trade so hopefully I'll be able to shed some more light on the software behind it all.

All NEX units from pioneer run android natively. There are a couple active threads on avic411 and others with current status. Last I knew they were trying to get ADB over USB to work. They have found all hidden service menus and options, can freely swap INTERNAL SD cards (with the OS/warp snapshot) and a bunch of other stuff.

They're working towards running android apps natively.

I've been thru the menus and back into some of those settings. It's actually running a version of froyo. LOL

So one thing I've noticed that's driving me nuts is the volume based on speed adjustment. I hate this "feature", personally, and had it turned off before removing the stock headunit. I also have it turned off on my Pioneer unit, but it seems like it's still happening. I can't wait to get rid of all the Bose stuff.

Anyone have pics of the backup camera plug and USB connection in center console? Trying to get some parts together before install.

Your center console USB is best grabbed right at te factory head unit. No matter what you do you'll end up needing to cut the connector off. The internal wires are standard USB color but GM proprietary connectors both at the head unit and at I believe it's X239 under the console.

Cut off the connector at the head unit, splice on a normal USB end. Carefully. They're like 26 or 28g wire. Small stuff. All standard colors. Match them up. Red/red, white/white, black/black and green/green. Graft the shielding back together and shrink it up. Done. Insert into new head unit.

The backup camera. Do this:

X4 connector on NAV unit. Pin 5 is Camera+ and Pin 15 is Camera- ---- use these to make a RCA jack for your camera input on new headunit (or another connector as appropriate)
