Pioneer AppRadio / DashCommand / CarPlay / Metra Kit Install Write-up

So I have been asked several times to do a writeup on this whole process...so here it goes. I have been wanting to put a legit audio source in my car ever since I owned it. The only thing I really don't like about the V's is the horrible nav and Bose setup. Even with using a separate audio processor, the Bose system is so integrated into the car that you can never fully get around it. The processors try to do what they can to normalize the signal but the Bose setup changes it off the fly based off volume so you never get a clean signal out of the car. It is also integrated into your door chimes and other factory car systems...so you couldn't delete it either. Metra finally came out with a kit that would keep all of your stock functions thank to their modules / harnesses but also install a double DIN headunit. This makes it so that I now have 4v RCA outs I can run to my processor that is completely clean of the Bose setup in the car.

So I chose the AppRadio 4 from Pioneer for several reasons. First, it is the cleanest looking headunit you can buy because it is essentially just a screen. I don't know why, but the radio industry has gone back away from the OEM+ look when it comes to design, buttons and UX. I wanted to keep the interior looking as OEM as possible so the radical looking buttons was out. Second, I didn't want to relocate the Aeroforce gauge that was in the factory clock location. DashCommand is AppRadio compatible so I could run gauges on the screen itself. Lastly, I wanted Apple CarPlay.

To run AppRadio / DashCommand, you use the HDMI port on the Pioneer. That requires the HDMI / Lightning adapter. To run CarPlay, you use the USB port. That takes just a regular iPhone cable and the USB extension provided with the Pioneer unit. To get the ODB2 signal to the phone, you use a wifi OBD2 dongle. If you have an Android phone, you would need a bluetooth one. I have not tested any of this with an Android phone.

Parts needed:

Removal

To start, you have to remove the factory unit and the motorized screen.

Kit Install

The kit install is pretty straight forward after you get everything apart. You do have to cut a section of the gray plastic part where the clock used to be to clear the double DIN headunit but that is the only modification of anything you have to do. There are two harnesses for the Metra setup that connect to the Pioneer harness. The instructions are easy if you have ever touched a wire in your life. The Metra kit is pre-wired for the steering wheel control unit so you just plug the box in and throw away the harnesses provided with that unit. When you initialize the radio for the first time, you leave that unplugged. After the radio is setup, you plug it in and follow the sequence provided in the instructions. It does auto detect our cars so there is no manual programing. You essentially just hit the volume up button on the steering wheel a bunch of times until it recognizes it.

DashCommand Modified

I downloaded the DashXL skin program to modify the dashboard setup. The program does allow you make gauge pages but they look terrible. I wanted the info I needed on the dashboard setup that looks much better. I was able to modify the existing skin to include IAT2's and Oil Temps. You can download it through the app on DashXL. A couple of notes:
  • I have not hooked up the amps yet but I did test the system through the factory rear speakers. Everything functions as it should.
  • The nav/radio buttons on the center console no longer work. They are not apart of the same system as the steering wheel controls. They are wired into the main harness. The rest of the buttons function as normal. This wasn't a big issue to me as I never used those buttons anyway. Obviously the CD slot now goes to nothing. The Pioneer AppRadio does not have a CD slot so there is no longer one in the car at all. I never use CD's and I store any videos on my iPhone so this was not a big deal to me either.
  • The Metra kit does match the factory interior very well.

Regarding sound, mine was terrible and the right front speaker was louder that the rest. I called metra and they told me to remove the resistor adapter (on the white and grays) and disconnect the rear outputs (green and purple) in order to test. I tested it and it sounded better but now I don't know if I should connect the rears with or without the resistors.

How is sound quality with the factory amp? Mine distorts and high volume but I am still playing around with it. Also, I am looking to tap into the stock Phone Mic.

A couple friends at the dealer printed some stuff out for me...

Looks like the USB is on its own dedicated connector...which would be X7...and has standard wiring code...

Meaning you should be able to clip X7 off and wire in a USB pigtail by matching colors and plugging that into the rear of the new head unit.

If for any reason it can't be done at the head unit at X7...it CAN be done at X239 under the console. One connector there. Standard wiring colors for USB.

I'd try black first. Funny that all 3 come directly into the navigation/radio unit...first time I've seen that. Usually XM is separate.

Got mine partially installed.

For the antennas, Black is AM/FM and Blue is GPS (and I guess Yellow is XM)

However, like a few others have said, my rear speakers don't work! I've double-checked the wiring and it's all correct for the factory amplifier.

Anyone figure out this issue?

EDIT: Also, when OnStar is active, both the Head Unit and the ASWC-1 completely power off. Does this happen to anyone else? I've checked the wiring 5-6 times and it's connected 100% according to the instructions.

I have same issue with rear speakers not working and high volume distortion. I'll try to update on Sunday when I dig into it.

There are at least two other guys that have the same issue, let me know if have any update please.

Here is the troubleshooting i did so far:
- aftermarket radio outputs to rears cables
- when stock radio installed back all speakers work
- followed initialization as in metra instructions
- sub in the back does work
- still cant get fucken rears to work

Maybe bummed harnesses?

Let's ask this...

Who all has had a successful installation and did you have Bose and/or Nav?

After calling Metra and working with them on the unit I found out a few things:

My rear speakers work just as they did before, which I can confirm, however when I change the balance/fade settings to JUST the rear speakers, there is no sound. Metra says this is normal and the AXXESS Interface can only differentiate between left and right, not front and back. Any settings adjusted in the stock nav system will stay with an aftermarket system since the amplifier is digital and retains the settings.

Originally the ASWC-1 would not work and either wouldn't detect my steering wheel or couldn't distinguish between skip forward/skip back.

I figured out that when resetting the ASWC-1, you have to HOLD (not just repeatedly press) Volume Up on the steering wheel until it's recognized. Then, if you have button mapping issues, use the AXXESS app on a phone or PC to remap the button giving you an issue.

For the backup camera, I can confirm that the stock camera works perfectly when spliced into an aftermarket unit.

For the antennas, you might need some adapters.

I used these:

AM/FM (black) Antenna: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000329HEK/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
GPS (blue) Antenna: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OOD5NRE/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You are correct on the fade issue, thanks for posting that. My rears work just not when you fade speakers all the way to the rear.

#113 ·
I posted a feedback thread for Metra installations...would you mind reposting this there...complete with links?

Thanks for the heads up on the adapters...that's gonna be nice if I ever upgrade to an AVIC unit.

For the volume issue, try turning the blue knob on the interface up. I did that and the problem was solved. Also make sure whatever phone you use for bluetooth is turned up as well. Should do the trick. Still no radio antenna or steering wheel controls working for me tho :(

What antenna issue are you having?

For the steering wheel controls, did you try this?

"Originally the ASWC-1 would not work and either wouldn't detect my steering wheel or couldn't distinguish between skip forward/skip back.

I figured out that when resetting the ASWC-1, you have to HOLD (not just repeatedly press) Volume Up on the steering wheel until it's recognized. Then, if you have button mapping issues, use the AXXESS app on a phone or PC to remap the button giving you an issue."

That is only for the Apple CarPlay side of the software. The Pioneer or AppRadio side will read from a USB thumb drive.

Ok, I've searched everywhere and even read the manual, but can't seem to see if it is possible to use a usb thumb drive in the other usb. Or does all your music have to be on your phone? Or can you have your phone in one usb and a thumb drive in the other?
Yes you can.

#124 ·
Incorrect.

You can only have one type of phone connected via USB...be it an android or apple. The USB port the phone is connected to DOES matter. Yes you can use a thumb drive in either of them or use the SD slot if your model has that.

You can also stream over bluetooth.

The AppRadio itself doesn't have a cd slot of any kind...whereas the AVIC and AVH models do...difference between them being AVIC has built in NAV...if you use your phone for NAV usually...save 300 plus dollars and get an AVH if you need a cd/DVD slot.

That is my plan.

Android in USB2 and wiring the stock USB in the console to USB1 for use with ipod and thumb drives.

Also hooking the factory 3.5aux jack up and installing a RCA video jack as well for that input source.

HDMI will come into the console along with the USB2 for the Samsung MHL adapter I need for my Note 4 for Android Auto.

my ASWC-1 will not work. It won't detect anything really.

7 short green flashes, 6 short red flashes then alternating red & green til the end of time.

tried 2 powers, 2 grounds, the pre-wired harness AND the harness that came with the ASWC-1. This necessitated that i partially dissect the 3018 harness. During which i found pins 14 & 28 coming out on the 3018 side are wired together and run as a single pink to the AXXESS interface. the pink wire for the AWSC-1 is also tied in at this same point (making basically a 4 wire junction).

the AWSC-1 instructions for 08-12 CTS state to connect pink to pin 14 and blue/pink to pin 28.

the prewired harness doesn't have a blue/pink. the pink ties into the same junction that brings pins 14 & 28 together to run into the AXXESS box.

KICKER: separating pins 14 and 28 resulted in a no-power state. the pink wire to the AXXESS interface needs to be connected to pin 28 in order for everything to work.

Once the wiring was deciphered and power restored the blue/pink was tied into the wire from pin 28 (also runs to AXXESS interface) and the pink to 14 per the online instructions. still no dice. tried 2 powers and 2 grounds again. no dice.

tried with and without climate panel. no dice either way.

Updated firmware from 4.09 to 4.11 - no dice. backtracked to the prewired harness. no dice.

Basically the ASWC-1 for me is a giant ball of fuck.

I did this install with a Kenwood radio a few weeks ago. Everything works fine most of the time but occasionally when I start the car I have power to the radio and climate controls but I have no control over the climate functions. The AC comes on but just stay wherever it was set when I turned the car off last. The radio powers up but I have no sound. When I turn the car off, let everything turn off, like the interior lights etc, and restart the car everything works normally. It's intermittent and I can't pinpoint any specific series of events that may contribute to the cause. I even swapped out the metra interface with a new one and I still have the same problem. Any ideas? Anyone else had this issue?

#132 ·
This would only happen to meet if I didn't initialize the metra according to the exact procedure as listed in the instructions. Now it happens if I disconnect my battery. I have go through all the steps again.

Got this mod done! I'm so excited, you can also see the beltronic installed radar detector and laser defeat.

Does anyone know how to get the dash command to show up on car play? I've got a pioneer 8200 installed and it doesn't show my dash command app in the menu...
