I'm just wondering if anyone has tried painting all the chrome pieces on the exterior of the car. If so have you had success and what process did you use ? I'd like to black out all my chrome but would rather not wrap it and don't want to use plasti dip.

Post pics if you have them.

I painted. Don't know the process but the grill only looks good for a month. The windows and fender vents did a little better but not by much. I was going to plastidip, what's wrong with it? I heard it lasts a long time. I personally have no experience with it but its got to be better than paint.

for the trim the only way to do it is to remove it, wipe it down. Sand, prime, and paint with a good quality paint. Its straight black I would use a good single stage like Imron
Anything else will not hold up

Your grill is black chrome so you wont be messing with that but I always thought the chrome ring around them would look good body color

if you want to paint on chrome, especially plastic chrome like grills and side vents the ONLY way to do it and make it last is use the right stuff. Back in my mustang days I started a company airbrushing the mustang running pony grill emblems and we used a house of color adhesion promoter ( http://www.amazon.com/ADHERETO-ADHESION-PROMOTER-AP-01-HOUSE/dp/B001JQ9FFA )

heres a couple pics of mustang grill ponies we did that we applied the ap-01 to, let dry, airbrushed the artwork then shot 4 coats of automotive clear over. after 5 years of me owning the company we never had 1 returned for peeling or flaking.

heres what candy apple sprayed over chrome looks like its transparent

now these pieces were left totally stock chrome finish, as you can see , the chrome appearance comes through ( about 80%) even though its had a coat of ap-01 and 3 or 4 coats of automotive clear . If you want to paint it totally over , hit it with a red scotch brite prior to the ap-01 ( 1 good coat...no more) then paint as if it was a body part, base coat then clear coats. whats cool about this stuff lets say you did your calipers a color, you could apply ap-01 to the parts then hit them with a transparent color , like candy blue or red and it would give the look of blue chrome or red chrome. If you do this right, painting the chrome can be 90% as durable as paint on the bumper cover. this house of kolor product is the ONLY way to do it and have peace of mind....we did at hundreds and hundreds of these if not thousands and I had maybe 3 come back for peeling or flaking.

Mine is white diamond and I like the contrast of the black (windows, wheels, trim etc) against the white, chrome not so much. But the decision on "how to" is a PITA! LOL Paint, dip, wrap.... also there is a spray vinyl that is suppose to be a dip competitor but tougher and glossier like vinyl (from the way I understand it).

How difficult was wrapping the trim? Did you remove it?

This is what I think I will do. Just tape it off and plastidip via the recommendation of Ray (Guard Dog). I was a sceptic of plastidip until I did my wheels. Since it's not my dd, I don't think I'll have to worry about it chipping. When it does I'll just respray
Herbie, how have the wheels held up? I thought about powder coating mine.

i guess a small bottle goes a long way on emblems cost not that much of an issue
HOK owned by valspar im sure the product is more reasonable somewhere else in their lineup Valspar Refinish — PR2 Plastic Adhesion Promoter | Valspar Refinish
I like the HOK colors but I know on boats their colors do not hold up, not that it has anything to do with a plastic adhesion promoter

if you have the black chrome grill you can wrap the chrome around the grill in vinyl. Takes some skill and practice but if you have the patience it can be done. I did it to the window trim and the trim around the front grills but did plastidip on the actual grill itself, the chrome rings around the fog lights and the fender vents. turned out real nice. The most important thing in my opinion if you use vinyl is to get a good quality vinyl not some cheap shit. I used 3m scotchguard 1080 bubble free matte black, turned out great but then i've used the stuff before on other cars. This type of vinyl is pretty forgiving compared to the cheap shit!

All of my chrome was professionally painted. Every last piece. Durable as hell.

I plasti dipped the rear trunk piece and wrapped everything else. Been through several car washes, laser and brush and the plasti dip has held up perfectly. Only wrapped the rest due to rock chipping as I put about 500 miles per week on Texas highways. I can always easily wrap them again. As opposed to painting. Initial plan was to have my chrome cerakoted. That shit is durable as Hell. My outer grill surround is wrapped and I love the look.
