So what I thought was a bad rear end is actually a bad wheel bearing. Anyone had to replace one? I have about 60,000 miles is that normal?

Replace them all the time on my Gm truck. Not that hard..... I wish I could get 60k miles out of a wheel bearing.

Some go longer, some dont. Are you certain its a wheel bearing? It wouldnt surprise me if so, but just covering all bases. I have seen cupped tires make a very similar howling noise if an alignment is bad. I assume youre speaking of a hub assembly though. I replaced one on my first gen at 110k. Was a pain to get off, but easy to put the new one on. No press required on these cars.
