What is this oily line? (Pictures)

580 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Lol
I was changing my oil today and spotted oil residue on a hose running parallel with, and above, the cross member.

The passenger end terminated to a hard line and looped back to another hose running parallel and aft of the oily hose, which also terminated to a hard line which ran up and behind the driver’s side of the engine block.

Appreciate any insight.

Power steering hoses
Probably actually leaking at the back of the pump but running down the hose.

Thanks @MrSurly

I’ll check the pump after my trip. It’s the original pump so I can likely expect this at 88K.
Check both the pump and the hose. When the hoses get old they weep fluid. Get some carburetor or brake cleaner, aerosol and clean the line up and down and you will see where it is coming from. I have 100K and neither the pump or hose is leaking on my 2013. My Corvette is another matter. It was both the pressure and return lines. Still have the original pump.

That’s exactly what I was planning on. It’s definitely the inlet line after looking it up thanks to MrSurly.

Glad to hear your original pump has lasted that long. Hope it’s not the pump but if it is then it is. I’ve been noticing slight stutters in my steering. This is probably why, due to air.

Be sure to examine the PS cooler lines. There are spring clamps on them under the radiator.

Mine had a pin hole in the metal line from corrosion.
