Searched in this sub forum and no dice.

Curious if there is a gaping hole in most dash kits if a single DIN is used, or if the radio is mounted in the upper portion of a double DIN opening with a pocket installed under it

If anyone has an aftermarket single DIN set up I’d be interested and thankful to see it.

Cheers.

If you're replacing your head unit, you need a new console bezel. Like the Metra. Which is double DIN. I don't think I've ever seen a single DIN. Can't imagine there's much call for it, since you'd be sacrificing the popup display, it's kind of a downgrade in terms of what most people would want with an upgrade - a better/larger screen. That being said, someone must make a generic single DIN filler for a double DIN opening. If I were going to do this, I'd look to fill the space with something useful like a gauge cluster.

No one makes a single DIN kit for our cars. Would be total custom job.

They make single DIN pockets. So you could put a pocket under a single DIN radio. But it would look terrible as already said, and these days double DIN radios are so cheap that I don't see a reason not to just go double and fill the hole properly.

Oh, one hundred percent. Smashed ass.

It is an odd looking receiver I was looking at. It’s the Alpine iLX-507. Its a double DIN screen but I happened to notice the receiver seems to be single DIN. I wasn’t certain if it would mount in far enough to bring the screen flush to the Metra kit double DIN opening.

Hope that clears it up. Here’s a link to it: ILX-507

In this case, it is a double DIN head unit, because the screen is fixed in position. There have been a few single DIN chassis units with a large fold out screen, and I thought this may have been one of them, until I looked.

At this price point, are you considering the Grom unit?

I was thinking about it, but our screen is very outdated. Watching videos of the Grom unit being manipulated wasn’t the most convincing either. I’m also not looking to shove a control unit in my glovebox

There is always the "Tesla style" 10.4 inch Android replacement. Some users experiences have been mixed, but I've been pretty happy with mine... I run the "Torque" app when I'm racing, and use it to display OBD data that the dash doesn't give you.

That’s spicy. I like that it eliminates the volume and nav controls that are useless after upgrading to an aftermarket stereo

I went with the Metra Double Din kit and Pioneer radio and could not be happier with my decision. The audio quality and screen resolution is significantly improved.

This. This is it. I wasn’t sure how a floating halo display might look. But that’s the sauce right there. Looks great, man. Love the build in the signature too. I tip my hat

Which head unit is that?

Thank you Sir! I went with the Pioneer Nex 8600 10.1 unit screen.

Also interested in something like that, we’re there a lot of modifications to install? Crutchfield lists that radio as not fitting my 11 coupe but obviously you installed it so just curious

I took my car to a certified radio & electronics shop that had experience installing these setups. It did not seem like it was difficult install for the technician. This radio with the Metra Kit will fit any Gen 2 CTS from 2008-15. The 8600 Nex 10.1 screen is the biggest screen and it does partially block the vents, but it is not an issue. They probably say it won't fit because of that reason. The Pioneer screen does come in various smaller sizes or you can opt for a different brand head unit that fits your style and budget. The only constant will be the Metra kit that is needed for any aftermarket stereo swap for these cars.

Unless you have really good skills, I recommend finding a good radio shop and letting them do everything. They should be able to do this install in no time (especially if they have experience with the CTS.
