Wagon Liftgate acting erratic

A fellow wagon owner sent me a video of his lift gate acting odd / borderline dangerous so I am reaching out to the experts here for input. I suspect struts are tired, but before he starts throwing parts at it wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues and how it was resolved. Thanks.

Struts. The motor lifts it and expects the gas struts to hold it but it doesn't. Catches it once and tries again and then gives up.
Agree. Struts are shot. PITA to swap out, or once in the wayback machine I had a dealer do it for $500 (maybe 8 or so years ago).
Much appreciated!
You can DIY, it's just laborious and involves removing the headliner.

He said it wasn't horrible and knocked it out pretty quickly. Thanks again for the help @subaru335i and @tinman
