Struts. The motor lifts it and expects the gas struts to hold it but it doesn't. Catches it once and tries again and then gives up.A fellow wagon owner sent me a video of his lift gate acting odd / borderline dangerous so I am reaching out to the experts here for input. I suspect struts are tired, but before he starts throwing parts at it wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues and how it was resolved. Thanks.
