In my last car I always ran what gm recommended.
mobil 1 synth 5-30.

However I know there are many opinions on oils and brands, and I'm not convinced the mobil is what I should use.

I did some searching to no real avail on the subject here.

Give me your thoughts and reasons for your choices.

Thanks!

I wasn't looking to port the motor! :)
Just seeing what others use/like. But I'm more interested in why they use what they do.

I was hoping that this would be an informative thread that could help folks make informed decisions on what goes in the crankcase.

Open-ended, maybe.

I was told by a trusted friend who just happens to work at the local LS specific shop that they saw excessive lifter and cam wear with every type of oil and they found the Mobil 1 0w40 seemed to protect the best.

Obviously not telling you that is what you should use, that is what I use and was recommended by a trusted friend/experienced LS performance/race shop.

Thanks

Nice! Because u were able to take a joke, Ill try and help out. I use Royal Purple HPS but here a few links from others to make the decision even harder. Redline seems to have a good showing.

Factory fill is a synthetic blend which i guess is ok for a stock motor. So Mobile 1 would be an upgrade. Ran Mobile 1 in my '06 GTO for 6 years with no issues. Went with RP HPS since the V is more heavily modded. Im not one to send out my oil to have it analyzed so someone else will have to chime in.

I have used Mobil1 for my regular CTS 3.6L. I send out the oil samples to Blackstone regularly. The Mobil1 has performed spectacularly and it has been recommended by Blackstone to keep going further and further on my mileage. I am now at 10,000 miles between oil changes and they tell me to keep driving further. My engine internals analysis has come back with much better than average results. I will now always get these lab analysis on every oil change for my V. Sorry that I don't have V specific information as I only have 3000 miles on my car, but I am just trying to give information pertaining to the Laboratory Analysis.

Instead of a direct answer I will tell a short story from about a week ago. A 5th gen Camaro we did about 2-3 years back with a cam and heads job came back in for some lifter noise. We checked it out and verified that was the case. Heads came off, lifters came out and sure enough 2 of them were trashed and in turn took out the cam lobes too. So I called the customer up and told him the bad news. I asked him what oil he had been using. He said I followed your recommendation for Redline 5w40 for most of the last couple year. I said "most"? He said ya, M1 was on sale at Walmart so I switched to that because it cost me $25 less per oil change. The labor for what amounts to a head and cam swap + a new cam and lifters amounted to far more....
