No crank no start

Hey everyone, I just bought a wrecked 2010 cts-v with hopes of fixing it. It was run off the road into a ditch and no airbags were deployed. I was able to fix most things but am running into a few issues I can’t figure out.

1. car won’t crank or start. Turn the key and everything cycles as it should but when you go to start nothing.

2. the obd says linkage error.

3. parking break won’t come off (not the main issue right now just didn’t know if it’s related).

I’ve cleaned all the grounds I could find, put in a new battery, and checked all the fuses and relays I could think of.

any ideas before I spring for a new ecm and tunes? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

If the front was jammed into a ditch, the writing harness near the ABS module could be damaged.
Pay special attention to the Tan-/Tan w black stripe single pair as that is a network connection,
usually if they do nothing at all then its not starting for a reason like lost comms or wiring issue or security type stuff, selector in park or neutral properly ect

Just to make sure this is the wire you’re talking about? I traced it and couldn’t see any punches or cuts in the harness and the clips look good.

That’s the one.
There are many other suspects to chase but that single pair is critical and it runs all over the car to all the modules.
Check the fuse box under the hood to see if it is loose. There are two bolts that hold the upper half to the lower half. Pull the top part, with the fuses, off and reseat it and tighten the bolts. They only pull the two half together and do not tighten until they stop.

This means your scanner isn't able to talk to the car's OBDII bus. Assuming the scanner is OBD-II, this means there's an issue with the CAN bus someplace, a broken or shorted or disconnected wire.

And since the ECM needs to be able to talk on the bus to crank the engine, you get no crank.

K I’ll give that a look when I get back from my business trip, thanks.
Maybe linkage error is preventing the ECM from determining if the transmission is in neutral or park, that would prevent start. Linkage error is probably showing two states when only one state or the other is valid, check your micro switches on the shifter. Maybe Parking Brake switch is set when it cannot be set.

Would that cause it to not release the emergency brake as well? I can’t get the electronic E brake to disengage either.

Where are the micro switches you’re referring to? I googled it but couldn’t find any reference.
Good luck, not the first time, check the attached diagram. If the CANbus connector appears to be connected properly, I still advise to disconnect and clean terminals. The location of this particular connector is susceptible to migration of oil and windshield fluid spill due to location. This connection is also common to the ABS.

No. "Link Error" has a very specific meaning - the scanner isn't able to talk on the CANBus. This is different from "isn't able to connect to" modules on the CANBus. This error says the CANBus is not responding at all. Like it's open-circuit. Liquid spills of any type shouldn't cause this. The CANBus is a serial data link that connects all the computers in the car (there are dozens). Someplace, that link is probably busted, the wire carrying the signal is open circuit or shorted out.

Metaphorical equivalent - you have a USB cable plugged in to your computer, but it's not connected to anything at the other end.
For anyone that’s curious it ended up being the ABS module. Thanks for everyone’s help
