Mustang Mach-E: More than a badge job?

Hi all!

I got to drive my in-laws’ new Mustang Mach-E over Christmas. I came away pretty impressed, especially with the dynamic tuning and driving fun the Mach-E allows.

The drive got me thinking though. Because Ford marketing boldly (stupidly?) put the Mustang name on this all-electric crossover, the engineering and design teams really had to go above and beyond in their work. And I think they did! The Mach-E does not look or drive like normal EV or SUV fare. Its body has lots of muscular creases and curves, and the drivetrain and ESP tuning gave me much more rear-driven, tail-wagging flavor than I expected out of a family mobility appliance. (Even though I was driving a low-powered AWD version.)

(As always, I wrote a ton of words on the Mach-E, but I’ll spare you here on the forums.)

Have any of you driven the Mach-E?

It would be a strong contender for me if I was replacing my family’s current work horse (a Tesla Model 3).

Best!
Mike

Oh, and I found the perfect charging location, too! :ROFLMAO:

I wish you had a chance to drive the GT, as I would love to read your review.
Alas, we need something a little bigger. With my wife and daughter, any over night trip fills our ‘13 Highlander to its limit.
Still, the GT version intrigues me.
Oh, and with Ford stating that they are no longer manufacturing “cars”, besides the Mustang, they were forced to put this one out there under the Mustang brand.

Thanks! And yeah, I wonder about the GT too. I bet it's a hoot!

Interesting that they say they were "forced to put this one under the Mustang brand." It feels pretty deliberate to me, in the same way that we now have SUV Aston Martins, Ferraris and Lambos.
Exactly. They weren't 'forced' to call it a Mustang any more than GM is being 'forced' to call an upcoming electric SUV a Corvette. They choose to cash in on a recognizable name to help move products in a vastly different category than the name is known for.

Oh wow. I really hope this isn't how a Corvette SUV would look...

It seems all those old 'Muscle Cars' dating back to the 1960's, became highly branded, as the car manufacturers do continue to use those same names, to push performance, even today.

Glad to hear the OP liked this one. . . .

However, attaching those iconic names to something like an EV though,
might backfire on one or two of them (JMHO).

digressing as i do..lol
Using old technology invented by another cam company, such as
Comp Cams recently did, and calling it something new can also backfire. . .

Cheers

Could have just called it the Mustang III

Or if you tie it to the generation like the Mustang II, this would be the Mustang VII

Or call it like it is and dub it the Mustang XL

Seriously though, having been a diehard Ford guy and previously owning 2 Mustangs, I still refuse to recognize the name. Ford's definitely using the marketing success of the legendary Mustang to push/sell this vehicle. That's probably my only gripe about it as I'm sure it's a great electric vehicle.
I think they should make a 3 row extended version and call it the Grand Mach-E.

I would not be surprised at all if Chevy put the Corvette name on an SUV. They historically haven't had a lot of concern for the provenance of names. They launched their revolutionary new X-body line in 1980 by resurrecting a model name from an Edsel, after all. Edsel II said that he sincerely hoped Chevy would have "the same success with it as we did". Turns out they did very well with it, though, selling millions of Citations despite record recalls(!).
Look at what they did to the Blazer name. Most disgusting. Consider their history with "SS"... It used to mean something, then in the seventies, eighties it meant nothing but a decal code, except for the Monte Carlo. In its latest iteration it actually meant something... it was its own model designation, rather than an apellation on an extant model. It was Chevy's best-kept secret, though, as they never told anyone about it. And "Custom" always meant the precise opposite, as did Deluxe. Remember how respectful they were of the iconic Nomad badge? Yes...on a Vega... and a full-size van. I continue to fear that someday they will stamp "Chevelle SS" on some hybrid shitcan.

They've already announced Corvette, Escalade, and Camaro will be expanded to include SUVs/electric vehicles/etc and become 'brands' instead of vehicle names.
