In the Market for a Manual V. seriously

1955 Views 37 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  713V
My daughter, who drives the Surly Coupe and adores it… is toying with the idea of getting her very own.
1. MUST be a manual trans, No exceptions
2. Coupe preferred
3. LESS than 90,000 miles
4. preferably stock or ‘tastefully’ modded
5. ‘14 or “15 model would be a pref
6. Recaros preferred

All except #1 are negotiable

T.J. Chapman in Utah always has a few CTSVs in his inventory. Sometimes they have rebuilt titles but that doesn’t scare everybody.
I’ll keep a look out for you in my area. Out of curiosity, why manual?

If and when she tires of the car, Surly will have another manual V ripe for modding / racing. Smart fellow!

Are you looking for one thats local/regional and/or nationwide?

She will have to finance the car, so branded title is a deal-killer. Also, for the same reason, she MAY be stuck with needing to buy a later year ('13~'15)

Her first car was a stick S10. She has always wanted to have another manual but once the kids came along, sedan, soccer needs, yada yada, and then three years ago she was in search of something just for her, something not expensive but sporty, fun to drive and manual. She found pretty slim pickins for manuals (NO interest in Beemers), ended up with a Hyundai Veloster Ultimate Turbo. Pretty cool, snazzy hatch 3-door alas, she had to settle for a DCT, NOT a real manual. They did offer it, but the wait list was months and that was pre-covid. So, the manual Jones has been forced to the back burner again.
At this time, she is getting notices from the Hyundai dealer offering relatively stupid money for her low-mileage Ultimate. Outright... as they admit that they don't even OFFER a manual equivalent. This has her shopping for new m/t cars.... and there are almost none. No interest in Civic Type R or WRX or BMWs also MONEY is a limiting factor (no Blackwing). She has lately homed in on (settled for) the Toyota 86/BRZ and Toyota claims there is only ONE new, manual 86 in the country... (FYI this is a Subaru BRZ coupe, flat-four engine, rebadged as and offered by Toyota)
She doesn't like the BRZ looks, the Toyota version is better. I feel like she'll be woefully disappointed in either...

Note that the kids are older, her commute is three miles, MPG is almost irrelevant for daily purposes, she's my pit crew, does her own brake jobs etc, she lives a block away from me, (and my shop).

Last night I mentioned "you know, in your situation... why not a Gen2 V?"

She lit up. We probably can't put that genie back in the bottle.

Downside is money is still an issue; she'll have to finance; age of the car could be a problem; she won't have a warranty or piles o' cash for repairs; won't have the new car reliability.

so, I started something.....
She already LOVES the Vs
We have some knowledge base and the forum for all the answers...

Open to a fly & drive, but regional would be good. We are in Longview, TX... DFW area to Shreveport, Louisiana along I20 is our area. Essentially the N/E corner of TX.

I like the BRZ looks, but I'm probably a little biased. Most people do seem to prefer the GR. If she's looking for a 'fast' car, the BRZ/GR probably would be a letdown. I wouldn't call it slow, but definitely a far cry from a V (even a V1). Add to that most Toyota dealers are still doing markups on GR86s and you can't actually order one (get on a dealer's list and hope they get a color/trim/trans you like). Plus if she's basically just driving down the block for work w/o any twisty roads (or intentions of AutoX/track days) a little buzzy car built for handling with lots of tire noise would also probably get old fast.

Good luck in the hunt for a 6MT V2. I'll keep an eye out. I'm always window shopping for cars I won't/can't buy 😄

Tilt-shift?

Edit- I looked it up. My phone did that automatically I just dialed up the blur it added a little more.
Tilt-shift?
A type of camera lens used to create certain perspective effects. So, no...you didn't use one o' these.

Your close to my neck of the woods, I will keep an eye out. And I'm in dallas monday-thursday.
Reason I asked why manual was in case she wanted to drag it at all. As you’ve personally experienced, getting a manual V down the track can be frustrating

I don't foresee her doing that unless it in my car. Her need for the car is first and foremost a manual transmission equipped daily driver. She's super acquainted with every piece of my build of a 'toy' car but her needs are more straightforward... an enjoyable, awesome car that does NOT live on the lift.

The effect in the picture of the BRZ is "Bokeh", the blurring of the background to highlight the foreground image. In a real camera, the effect is achieved with a low aperture setting on the lens. On a cell phone, the effect is added after the picture is taken by the camera software. You can turn it off as well as increase/decrease how much blur is applied.

Tilt-shift is actually something different.

Here's are a couple of representative examples of tilt-shift photography:

Plant Building Natural landscape Wood Land lot
Bus Land vehicle Vehicle Motor vehicle Automotive lighting

They look like pictures of scale models, but are actually real-life. All tilt shift pictures have this kind of quality. I've got a "LensBaby" tilt-shift lens for my Nikon. The effect it produces in-camera is superior to anything you could hope to do in post-processing on a computer.

Besides the miniaturization, tilt-shift can produce selective focus areas and also intentional distortion which is what his phone mimicked digitally (The car appears curved).
