How much V is too much for a reliable DD?

Looking at this. Trying to research all these parts but seems it may be a bit much for a reliable DD. Opinions?

i think some of you's around town driving is going a few blocks, make a right, go a few blocks, make a left, then travel at 55mph with no lights or traffic for 10 miles.

for me its go to the end of the block, stop sign, make left, go few blocks, red light, make right, then 13-15 lights and traffic, slow down and change lanes because someone is making a right or left for 2 miles, , make right and park
Granted you dont hit all 13 lights.
Ehhh lots of variables here for me.

I like whoever said 'anything's a DD if you're brave enough', this is true.

With good injectors/cam specs/tuning, driveability would be fine. But I wouldn't want to DD an 800rwhp car I didn't build myself or start from scratch with. Too many unknowns for me. I don't love a reconstructed/total loss title either unless it's something that is a beater. Cons are seeming to overpower the pros here, imo. I definitely don't love the idea of getting something like this from a dealer either, regardless of whether they move a lot of V's or not. Dealers and car lots send us things all the time to sort out and I have never gotten one and thought 'wow this is nicely put together'. It's a shit show at best and they are looking for the cheapest way to get the car in resalable condition.

I'm getting older now as well so what I value most in a DD is...am I going to get from point A to point B without getting tools out or being hassled. In good weather, bad weather, cold starts, hot starts, heat soaks, etc.

If you have another car to drive if this supposed DD breaks down and you have to order a part, that helps, but this isn't looking very appealing to me at least. Good luck!

This isn't an EV thread (mileage is overstated by 12.5% on average vs advertised, per a recent study).

Certainly the DIC has the potential for significant error when injectors and fuel flow rates are tweaked. But that goes both ways. Clearly, the only way to verify this is by keeping track of mileage!
My build gets around 4 to 6 MPG when farting around town...the occasional hooning between the lights. While striving to test its best, one day, I drove it very purposely on the interstate at a steady 70 mph for a thirty mile round trip (Jeeeeeeze that was tough to maintain) and actually measured the MPG at 10.8 on E85 so it is doable.

FYI I'm real rich (think Fast and Furious when I let off the gas: snap crackle and pop), and i still get 11-14mpg depending on fuel. But as a daily, I'm not doing a ton of triple digit pulls. Just stop light to stop light. :D
I got triple digits on the daily.
Not including when I’m passing someone on a country road doing 42.

We all understand, I hope, that when Jeopardy posted herein with the classic ~should I buy this~ inquiry... it was (as usual) NOT a real question as his buying the car was a fait accompli .

The only question is will it make a good DD.

NO, not as is, but it might depending on how he changes it to fit the role....

And depending on his tolerance level for dicking with it regularly.

Well actually when I originally posted I was undecided. You all had already helped talk me out of another one I was considering. This one was originally intended to be purchased as a DD but after MUCH research and lots of input from many sources I have decided to purchase it but not as a DD. I'll be keeping my current DD and just adding the V to the fleet.

This thread got me thinking about what I DD'ed from age 27-33, a 1989 Mustang, 331, Vortech SC, big cam, Aeromotive A1000 hanging off the rear bumper, heavy single disc clutch, full cage and bigs/skinnies. Even drove 6 miles home once in the snow with Et streets on the rear and M/T sportsman front runners (pucker factor was high). Now at 54, I would not think of owning a DD with even a clutch (I drive 40mins one way for work)

Personally I wouldn’t buy someone else’s heavily modified car (unless it’s someone you know well or a respected member of the community where you can somewhat trust things were done well). Generally they sold for a good reason and I don’t like inheriting someone else’s kluged together problems.

But some like to play with fire and since you are coming from Mazda your tolerance for pain is probably really high

Bolt ons are the sweet spot for maintaining reliability but you certainly could get lucky and have a well put together car.

There is a ton of truth in that statement about pain tolerance and Mazdas.

This car was built by a respected member on here but unfortunately I havent been able to reach him via PM and he hasn't visited since he sold it. I have personally spoken to every owner after him up to who this dealer got it from.

I actually agree with you wholeheartedly on inheriting other people's problems but I feel like this has a good chance of being a fun weekend car. Now that I have abandoned the idea of this being a DD I feel more confident in this being a decent decision.

So I'm just updating this because I should be taking delivery on this in about a week or 2. The dealer has been taking care of a few small things such as an alignment, and a wheel sensor, and a tune.

I know this is a dynojet with standard CF but these are still pretty decent numbers I thought. 12 psi and 21 degrees of timing. 769 on pump and 816 on ethanol. This is with some really shitty tires too.

That's more than decent. With traction and proper cooling you should be lower 10s.
I have a similar set up with Mamo heads, except mine is stock bottom end. Just got it back after new trans, converter and heads/cam/e85 upgrades. My cam choice was a little aggressive, but very well mannered on the street. I think you’ll love this car and happy to see that you pulled the trigger on it.

Yea I went back and forth a bit. I'm taking a little bit of a chance buying a high horsepower racecar sight unseen but the dealer has been great. He has answered all my questions and sent me pictures or videos of anything and everything I've asked for so that has been nice. Im just ready to get it, slap some fresh rubber on it and take it out for a spin.

The performance of this car will blow your mind! Just get a decent tire in the rear like R888R tires and the car will be more capable.

Congrats! And good luck! I hope it is everything the dealer has promised and no hidden gremlins.

Me too but if there are I'll just have to take it in the shop and get to know it a little better. When I made the decision to purchase I knew I was accepting that possibility.
