I tried searching, but get a lot of For Sale ads, and I dont want to get banned again for being in the classified. SMFH.

My V is on its way here from Texas and I know it has an upgraded HX and a small under hood ice tank. I just dont understand how the system works I guess. If you fill the ice tank with ice, and that eventually melts, wont you need to drain some water to refill it again later? So that would make me think this water does not mix with the coolant system, right?

Secondly, does the HX have coolant in it? and does that mix with the coolant from the engine/radiator, or are the two systems separate?

I've built several (and bought) LS motors, but this is my first LSA. Its obvious that heat is the enemy and I will be closely watching iat.iat2 temps but need to know how the systems work.

Thanks

I found the answer on the ZL1 forums. In Florida, where it never gets cold, it seems its best to use just straight distilled water in the HX system/ice box. Which I now know is separate from the engine cooling system. Correct me if I am wrong please.

I have the bmr tank and it has a separate petcock to drain the tank. Both systems are completely separate. I would imagine in Florida you can run distilled no problem, I’m in the northeast so I run the gm dexcool in both systems

You can set it up with a hose to drain under the engine, Ive seen some just stick a hose on and drain outside of the car. I have mine set up with a 180fitting that routes the hose back down by the exhaust header so when I go to the track and want to add Ice I just release the drain valve by the tank and stick a pan down under the car where the passenger header comes down.

Does the petcock drain have a hose attachment? I'm hoping it doesnt drain all over the engine bay.
Mine has a hose also except I ran it back to the passenger front wheel well where the factory overflow was that came off the fill “t”

Check the HX in front of radiator. Mine has a drain cock on driver side. I typically remove the plastic shield in front of tire and then let her rip.

I’d still run a corrosion inhibitor like water wetter at a bare minimum.

Most don’t drain past the ice tank because you run the risk of introducing an air bubble or pocket into the system. Burping the HX can be a laborious job.

Under hood tanks are not worth much once you have some heat into the system when compared to a trunk tank. If you are planning on cooling the system down for track use switch to a trunk tank and bigger pump.

Yea, if I have to remove the wheel well liner just to make room for ice, I'll be changing the system to something like BettyWhite has. That's a pretty slick setup.
I will only be adding ice when I plan on racing a friend, or going to the track. I just wanted to know more about the system before the car gets here. It should be delivered late tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to find some extra mods the dealer didnt notice. I'd love to see a DSX flex fuel sensor and some ID1050s in there...🙏 A man can dream, can't he?!

The supercharger was rebuilt 20k miles ago (please be ported, please be ported), so I'm hoping the brick is new. Either way, I'd like a ZL1 lid even if its just for looks.
