Driver side O2 sensor clip mount fbombfbombfbomb

B1S1 (driver side upstream) O2 sensor replacement today, working from below in driveway. Got sensor out of exhaust, got wire harness unclipped (with the dang plastic cotter pin design). What I can’t seem to get access to or even see at all is the push pin or whatever it is that holds the O2 sensor clip to a metal bracket in the engine bay. Meaning, the clip on the upper end of the O2 wire is attached to a metal bracket that I just can’t undo. can’t even really see the damn thing. Note: new replacement O2 sensor doesnt have a push pin (or whatever it is) on it so I need to reuse the one that is currently attached to my old/faulty O2 sensor. Anybody recall how they took care of this?

Not sure how coherent this description is. Was hard writing while withholding paragraphs of salty language!

I can feel your pain all over again!

I think this might be what you are fighting with and if you are, it's a BIOTCH to remove, it is right behind the drivers head and might appear to be a metal bracket or attached to the bracket at the back of the head on that side.

Try to get a small screw driver under the black retainer on the connector and slide the connector OFF of the retainer. That's how I would do it if I had to do it again, because like you, I just couldn't see.

I usually use a small 90 degree dental type pick to release black retainer and can usually release with one hand after years of practice

Sask! You have given sight to a blind with rage man. Yes, black metal bracket. No idea why GM didn't affix the ECM side of the sensor to that bracket versus attaching the O2 sensor side to it. Been thinking about removing the cat there for better sight line and access but I'll instead spend time both above and below with your approach.

Thx Praire. Am hoping you are a mechanic and GM uses this lame design across multiple cars versus you saying without saying I'm going to be replacing this damn thing many more times! Thanks for the tool idea. Oh, and do any particular curse words seem to work better than any others? ;)
I worked in a transmission shop for years so a lot was done by feel . After that I moved to a Pontiac dealership which became a Mazda dealership. Retired from automotive about 12 years ago now just a hobby .

@SaskV The Sask Method worked! Deployed the Boy to lay on motor up top and hold the dang connector still for me, stop it from rotating while I reached up from below with thin screwdriver to lift the black tab. Job done. Thank you.

It sure helps when one can SEE what you're dealing with! Glad to hear you got it!
