Aeroforce Interceptor Gauge Install Location

Hi All,

There's an awesome old thread in the "How To" section on installing the Aeroforce Interceptor gauge in a Gen II CTS-V where the clock is (just below the Nav screen). I thought rather than resurrecting that old thread I'd start this one to ask my question.

There are three logical places I could install the gauge -- clock space, in a defrost vent pod or in the tray beside the cigarette lighter. What I'm trying to figure out is what location is most practical for it's intended use. I've thought all along the clock space install would look awesome, however I'm beginning to question if I need to go with the defrost vent pod. Broadly, this is data monitoring of a number of different (and helpful) OBD II items. With the ability to add the alert lights for high temps, etc. it would seem to make sense to keep this in your line of sight. I'll eventually throw a wideband O2 on it, so again, helpful to have in the direct line of sight at speed.

Has anyone else fought with this when making the decision on where to put it? Curious to get your input on what's worked well and if there was anything that didn't. A secondary consideration would be the ease of install. It seems the vent pod is an easier path to getting to the OBD II port, however the clock space install isn't too intimidating of a job to tackle. Thanks all!

Unless you use a suction cup windshield mount OR invent something new and 3D print it, the vent pod thing is the easiest to see.
You want the gauge positioned so it is in your line of sight while you're looking out the windshield.

Ashtray is the worst-possible location since it requires you to look down and in to the car to see it, completely eliminating your view of the road ahead while doing so.

Agree with Rocket, I'm picking up an Interceptor as soon as more stock is in.
Had the same thoughts you do and decided on the defrost vent. Line of site was the deciding factor. I didn't have clock option as the Tesla style screen replaced my stock unit.

Are you only planning the one gauge?

Thanks for the input. As much as I'd like to put it where the clock is, the vent pod seems to be the most useful location.

Yes, the plan was to just do the one gauge now. When I knock out the headers, I'll add a wideband O2 to plug into it as well. Another perk of the vent pod option is the fact it would be relatively simple to swap from a one-gauge to a two-gauge pod if I need to down the road. I haven't gotten too deep into the mod list progression in a little over a week of ownership so I haven't identified the "need" for the second gauge yet.

What are you planning to go with as your second gauge? Separate wideband O2 or something else?

I'll be going with a Wideband in the second pod as well. I'm still on stock exhaust but I've seen threads in here where people have welded a bung in the stock exhaust.
Reason I asked about other gauges is if you plan on a second one at some point, I'd prob get the dual pod instead of paying twice.
After looking at the options more closely from the driver's seat, as much as I'd like to put this in the clock location, it needs to go in a defrost vent pod to be in the proper line of sight. Thanks all for the feedback.

It really doesn’t need to be in line of sight

I assume you've seen the pictures of vent pods in use. I have my wideband in one and posted that. I like it. Someday I will upgrade to a dual gauge and add an aeroforce.

Yeah vent pod is best, keep your eyes close to the road at throttle. I made my first pod for myself for that very reason; they were liked here so I started selling them. Have a look at my site and let me know if you have any questions.

Just installed my AEM wideband gauge today in the vent mount supplied by BlueCoupeV.

Quality piece and looks like it was installed at the factory.

Thanks for the input. I read through the entire thread and the discussion on how this progressed and materialized into you producing the solution (that's awesome)!! I recognize there are differing opinions, but I feel pretty certain this is best if in the line of sight and easy to see when it matters most (at full throttle). Will definitely check out your site and reach out when it's time to grab the gauge and pod.

Gotta say, you're finding out the value of this board vs Farc3b00k groups/pages.

It's awesome. I'm definitely a "forum guy". I don't have a strong background in cars, but over the past 20 years I've learned a lot from the many hours spent on the Corvette Forum (user name -- midnight89) and LS1Tech (user name -- midnight02). Finding this one for the CTS-V was my first step in doing research on these prior to buying one. I'm currently in sponge mode absorbing all there is to learn over here and look forward to being able to share some personal/first hand insight for others as I work through the process on my own build.

Funny story, I noticed SS1LE02 on the board here is the creator of the Sideswipe and Pocket Protector. I've known his previous invention -- the SSRA in the F-Body world for a long time!

Happy to report that my Aeroforce Interceptor gauge arrived today and it's been installed. Went with the @BlueCoupeV / oemprovements single pod and the white background (shown reversed for black background with white text). Install took about 5 minutes and most of that time was wrapping electrical tape around the bezel of the gauge so it would fit snugly in the gauge pod. Thanks all for the guidance.
