A Seriously Surly Coupe

================================================================================================================================= TLDR: There are a couple hundred posts covering a range of not build stuff topics including a boat restoration(!). To skip all this not build stuff content and go to the actual start of the real rebooted build stuff ten MONTHs in the future (2022!), just click here: The Surly 427 Plan!
==================================================================================================================================

Well, here goes. I'm making a build thread for preliminary discussion prior to making changes. I'm doing it this way not because I'm being smart about it but simply because I ordered a few parts, started tinkering and then learned that my job requires that I travel for a while. So I am likely going to be overseas for a month or two so I might as well work on a plan for when I return.

The car: 2011 V coupe BDE Stick Shift Slick Roof 134k miles.
The realistic 'first build' plan: low-level bolt-ons, puley/brick/HX/CAI/ and the required support pieces, maybe pick up 70~80 hp?

The someday "second build" plan: reach 700 rwhp withOUT short block or heads AND remain as outwardly low-key as manageable.

What is done so far:
3" Mid pipes with X, withOUT 2nd cats.
Primary cats gutted.
Z06 wheels and MT DRs
That is ALL, stock everything else right now, air filter to muffler.
HP Tuner bought, I changed the stock file to "no mil" on 420 and 430 (cats)

What I have ordered:
2.5" Mepco pulley
solid isolator
AFE Momentum gt CAI

What I planned before being called away:
Install isolator and while I'm in there (here we go...) port the blower and the snout, add the pulley, reinforce the brick

Next on my mental list to acquire:
heat exchanger
HX pump

It's been suggested that I'm severely lacking in my plan.
Feel free to offer direction!

Injectors.

If porting blower, port heads too and upgrade valve train.
Probably not going to pull the heads for this first stage. Might consider rocker or spring related changes for durability given the high miles. Tell me about the "trunnion" upgrade.
Also, I read (on the internet and we all know how solid that is) that on these engines you can't change the lifters without pulling the heads...is that accurate? I've built a few hot rods and many engines but this is my first foray into the LS platform.
Others have said injectors. I see builds with 850s, 1050s, 1300s.
Which is the reasonable injector that can work at (be readily tunable for), say, 550 wheel and ALSO continue to work with a later 700 build? Is a one-size-does-all injector even a thing?
True that the heads have to be pulled for lifter upgrades. I'd recommend ID1050's for injectors.

Heads are easy to pull and if you're doing a cam, I'd suggest sending the heads in for upgrades. Karch hooked me up through West Coast Racing and I couldn't be happier.

Trunnion upgrade is recommended and easy as well.

What part of the world are you headed to?
If you are even thinking of ever going E85 get bigger injectors. Buy once to support upgrades later.

Be specific... 1050s? 1300s?

I find that shocking after decades of "accessible" V8s.

I'd recommend ID1050's for injectors.
Do these meet my suggested flexibility for range of builds?

Would love to know 1. what was done
2. was it swap and core or build and wait?
3. what was turnaround time and
4. approximate cost

I'll assume that trunion refers to the pivots/axles of the rockers?

What part of the world are you headed to?
The U.S, Territory of Guam.

1050's will get you to low/mid 700's on full e85. If you don't ever plan to do heads, that would probably be enough. I've had 850's,1050's and now 1300's because I can't seem to stop progress.

1050x will take you up to 700 comfortably, you may also want to go to a larger tb from either mamo or nick Williams, doesn’t add a ton of power but will definitely increase throttle response

as a first build component or a second build?
You’ll notice a big difference with just being stock, you can easily install a ported ls7 tb from mamo with your cai and will notice a big difference especially through the lower range. It’s plug and play. You can call or email tony at mamo motorsports he’s a great guy

As others have commented, if you are truely going to be happy with 700 and not go further then 1050's will be good. But, mods are like drugs... the more you get the more you want!! Only you know what the pursuit will be. I'm at 60% IDC with my ID850's, pulley combo, stock cam, heads, manifolds. But I am much more conservative than most on here. I'll do headers at some point but at this time don't expect to do cam or head upgrades. If I do I will probabaly have to reinvest in injectors...
An M6 on corn with stock heads and blower will be fine with 1050x and an aux pump.

Yes

Ported and larger intake valves installed with all new hardware
Swap and core
Pay the core and send yours back = no real wait time
Mine was done 2 years ago so you'll have to check on cost but it was very reasonable

Newbies need clarity...
HX coolant ....
Or
Fuel....
Pump?

yeah he means fuel pump in series.
I am ordering some parts...
While I'm overseas, I will be contemplating the install of a Lid/brick/HX/pump/reservoir/can/rockers/pulley/shifter and possibly headers, all of which are being sourced from forum members. There are also a CAI and an isolator on the way. All the things will be sitting in their boxes waiting for me to come home and get to work. Most of that is just cooling, but a couple of them are going to demand more fuel...

I saw someone was changing heads, not me. Good be a good deal out there for that.
No heads for me, no cam either.

(EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa)

The only actual power upgrades (so far) would be the pulley and headers. Not a big change as I understand it, but likely enough that I have to do injectors... maybe a fuel pump?
