2010 V Looking for backup camera advice?

Hello all, Im new to the group and have been doing research about adding a backup cam to my 2010 V. Seems like there was a way to add the 2011+ cam to the car and would need to have a dealer flash the system for it to work correctly. I prefer not to have to go that route as most dealers around here wont touch a car and reflash items they did not install. I like the idea of an oem setup which I believe would also make the passenger mirror tilt down when in reverse...and the screen will automatically pop up.

Now I just placed an order for the Grom V-line V2 and opted for the additional camera harness. I could use this but Im not sure if this would work close to oem that would show the backup automatically or if I have to turn to a screen view everytime I want to see behind me.

The advantage of the grom is that i can use any camera for the front or back etc that may be much better video quality and most likely cheaper than an oem setup.

How hard is it to go oem and whats totally involved or do I just rely on the Grom?

I have been researching this as well so I'll be following. I have the VL2 as well and know that if I power the camera off the reverse trigger wire it will flip on when I go into reverse as oem but if I power it constantly you have to go to the vline screen to view it. I would like to have a 3 way toggle switch that will allow me to turn on the camera while driving (using the vline screen) when pushed 1 way and to activate the front camera when pushed the other way. That is my plan of now. I'm just unsure on where to mount the 2 cameras.

You can do a switch with a relay to turn on both cams when not in reverse and view them on the vline while driving and still retain the reverse light trigger like normal. Id put the switch on a small panel beside the front power outlet under the climate controls since is a small space. Thats what I would do in that case.
I just added the Navtool interface, and a rear camera from Amazon. Seems its best to turn on the interface each time I get in and then the camera works best- for the money it seems like a decent set up.

I was thinking of doing a cam setup just like that. Did you have to drill the trunk to mount it or just double side tape for now?

The grom unit reverts to the oem screen automatically when i put the car in reverse. Now I know it will work like oem even though this car did not have that feature. Just need to decide what camera to get andbest way to mount it. I prefer not to drill any holes. And no need for an expensive high quality camera with a much older screen resolution.

I removed the trunk trim piece from the trunk lid and drilled a 3/8" hole which is what I needed for my camera- it has a threaded stud and nut & washer to secure to the trim, & also an adhesive gasket. Seems to be a solid fit. I agree with the resolution point, no need for a 1080dp since we won't benefit from it. This is the camera I bought from Amazon:

I haven't gotten my grom unit hooked up but does that mean I dont have to tap a reverse trigger wire for the camera? How does the grom know to turn on the camera in reverse if it didn't originally come with a backup camera?

That camera setup above looks perfect.

I really cant speak for how the Grom set up will work, since mine is NavTool it has an RCA cable on the radio harness and a 12V wire for power, then the opposite ends went to the camera and tapped into the reverse lights, which triggers it. I would check to see what wiring Grom supplied and see if it has camera wires included. Hope this helps. I used a Youtube video on installing a back up camera on a CTS, alot of helpful tips when removing trunk pieces and wire routing.
