What a terrible night. Use jack stands!

So ill start out by saying I'm fine and wasn't hurt but the car is a bit banged up. I began the day wanting to put on my Eiback lowering springs and had read up about it for a while so felt comfortable doing it. I have a new garage so I am not fully set up but I had all my tools and to work I went.

Rear left was fine, the biggest problem was pushing the push pin out of the top of the grommet more because there was a lot of road grime in there. Rear right same thing, lots of grime but had it done in 20-30 minutes.

Front passenger side I jack the car up, slide the jack stand under it. I didn't have it high enough so I pull the jack stand out and go to reach for the jack. *Kaboom* Jack releases all pressure the the car drops onto the jack. Front wheel was already off, looking back this could have been avoided had I left it on but I broke the lugs loose when it was on the ground, then I jacked it up and for some reason took the wheel off then went to put the jack stand under the car. Clearly very stupid and I was really lucky to not have my hands/arm or the jack stand under the floor boards when the car dropped like that.

The floor jack stopped the momentum and the rotor did hit the ground but it didn't damage the rotor. The side sill on the other hand is done. The door managed to make it unscathed and the gaps looked fine after I got the car jacked back up.

I was using my father-in-law's "hand me down aluminum" jack. Ive jacked my Mercedes sprinters with it, my wife's venza, never had a problem but it just decided to fail when I had it under the V

I am happy I wasn't under it, and im not even that upset because it could have been way worse. Let my mistakes be a lesson, use jack stands and be safe under your cars, I know I have a kid and family that depend on me and its not worth pulling short cuts.

    now for the ugly...

Not having anything to get the car off the ground I had to swing up the road and I bought a nice new jack (that cost more then I would like to admit) raised the car, blocked it for the night and ill tackle the rest tomorrow.

    Wow... glad you're ok man.

I think about my future and kids whenever I have to work under the car. I always use a minimum of 2 jacks if jacking up one side, and 3 if entire car... and at the same time, I use jackstands or ramps positioned as a safety precaution without any weight on them in case the jacks fail. I don't feel comfortable under the car with all the weight on just jackstands.

    Yikes!!! Glad you're ok.
I had my 2 previous cheapo made in china jacks lose pressure like that, but I wasn't under the vehicle either.
I decided then to spend the money on a good jack, even if I don't get under the car without jacks in place.
It cost me $400. Buy once, cry once.

Ill check in the morning, I need a break from the car for the night.

My father in law felt really bad, hes a big time gm guy and loves the V and to help with the car. I told him not to feel bad, it could have happened with any jack, and in the end its just a car.... a nice car.

What a terrible night. Use jack stands!

Had a variation on this story with a previous car. I was jacking up one side on an epoxied floor. The 'down' side tires slipped and the car fell off the jack. Scary as hell.

Had my jack fail as I was pulling the jack stand out from underneath car and the jack stand impaled the rocker cover.

Hydraulic cylinder lost a seal, bought new jack next day and inspect often

$150 plus paint to replace rocker cover. Good as new.

Glad you were not hurt bro, pretty easy fix though

Could've been much worse man thankfully you're okay, if the plastic rocker molding is the only damage its a cheap and easy fix.

I had a similar situation just a couple of days ago, bit fortunately nothing fell. Most floor jacks are hinged right at the top of the lifting arm. There's usually a pin and a "control arm" that keeps the contact surface parallel to the floor. You can see it well on this picture below. Well on one of my jacks that flat metal bar is connected down at the base to a pin. It slides over the pin and is retained with a snap ring. I had my wife's car on the jack (with jack stands but not ON the stands, weight was still on the jack). I went to lower the car onto the stand and the jack wouldn't go down. I then noticed the retaining ring had rusted off or something and the metal bar had slipped off the lower pin. It's down by the piston so you can't really see it well unless it fails....

This would allow the upper contact perch to pivot. It could have simply tipped and dumped the car off the jack. Thankfully there's an identical bar on both sides and the second one kept things level. And fortunately the car was lifted in such a way that it wasn't under any lateral forces at the lifting point that would make it til. But it was one of those powerful reminder moments...

I had the seal blow out in the pretty blue Harbor Freight jack too. I was shimmying the car around with the wheel still on just trying to reposition it closer to the wall. Drop w/o warning like a stone. I needed to change my shorts after that.

Now THAT looks cool. I didn't see where it said how much each of the two lift units weigh. Looks like you could hang them on the wall pretty easily and they're only 4 inches thick when folded. Man that would make working on the car easier and probably safer too.

Oddly enough I somehow feel like this is something the wife would actually support spending money on...

Any clue what is a really good price on one?

Not bad. Assume that's new and they aren't on sale ever? Still...a good floor jack can run 200-300. And this is fully powered, which is so much better.

I like that you could take it to the race track etc.....

I think it's cool, but for $700 you can get a full two post lift which would be far more functional in a garage set up.

The max jax lift is fully portable as well.

Wow that sucks, worker at my shop was running his car up on some ramps and drove right past the edge. Smashed is ground effects/side moldings but the metal of the car was all fine luckily.

The ranger quickjack is pretty cool for simplicity.

Did you use this Quickjack 5000 on the V? If so where did you jack from? I am going to a friends house to use his to do the diff and trans fluids next week (and possibly brakes). I want to make sure that it does work on a CTSV Wagon/Sedan.
