Anyone have pics of the inside of the secondary cats? Post 'em up!

Curiosity is really getting the best of me on this. I hear that they are cats, but they are somehow straight through. So can someone who has removed theirs post up a pic?

I keep seeing posts where folks are saying that they cut out the secondaries and they could see right through them. I've never heard of a "straight through" cat, so I'm thinking that the secondaries eventually burn out when the primaries are removed. I'd still like to see pics. That way I can reference this post when people try to argue that they are not "real cats".

I'm starting to wonder if certain years / models had resonators and others had cats? Maybe California models had different emissions?

So far I have 2 replies with cats and one with resonators. Please respond with year, whether it is a coupe, sedan, or wagon, and what state it was originally sold in. I'd like to get to the bottom of this one. Thanks!

I'll bet its an emissions thing. Here is a pic of my emissions sticker under the hood. Let's see how it compares to yours.

Mine is a 2011 Coupe A6 and was sold in TX and the secondary cats look just like regular cats.

Can you do me a favor and see if your emissions tag on the underside of the hood shows the California standard of PC / LEV?

jlinks, Can you also look at the underside of your hood on the emissions tag and see if it does or does not show the California emissions standard?

I'm betting only the cars with CA emissions have secondary cats.

I don't have my stock hood. I bought a hood of a friend of mine. Mine had rock chips and 2 little dents. I have no idea where his car was originally sold at, but i can still take a pic of it later when i get home if you want.

All good then. I know I have secondary cats without looking just by the smell I get after doing some hard runs. So with that said, I have the CA Emissions tag under my hood. I'm more interested in seeing what jlinks' hood tag says since he has resonators. I'm hoping his does not show the CA emissions spec and this may clear up who has secondary cats and who has resonators.

It's time to give up the ghost that CA emissions differ from the other 49 states.

Yep. That's a cat for sure. Thanks! Waiting on jlinks to let me know what his emissions sticker says to put this to rest.

But how does this explain some V's having resonators in place of cats? Either there is a difference or those saying that they are straight through are high.

Not sure, but have you found any documentation or even parts that specify CA only from GM?

Fwiw, one of the internals on my AR cat was totally empty when I went to remove them.

Yeah I wonder if those with "resonators" just have blown out cats. I'm pretty sure that they will burn out in no time with the primaries gone. Maybe this has happened to folks and they didn't even know.

I sold the V. I deleted the primary cats a yr or so prior I suppose it's possible they burned up. They absolutely didn't have the mesh shown above. Just some baffling on the sidewalls. Even then when I deleted them the drone got rediculous.

Did they look just like the ones pictured on the outside? Trying to wrap my head around why some would have resonators.

Hmm, if they were different, then I'd assume they would not have the same case. I'm pretty confident that the secondaries are going to burn out without the primaries in front of them. Probably what happened to yours then. I think I posted about how much the secondaries started to reek after removing the primaries and people all said my tune was wrong. I do run it a hair rich at 11.3:1 AFR at WOT with 18-19 degrees up top thanks to 91 octane E10, but that's nothing extreme. That being said, the secondaries are going to run a hell of a lot hotter without the primaries in place and I'm guessing they will just self destruct over time.
