Social media helps CSP catch street racers - KRDO

SAN LUIS VALLEY, Colo. - At least nine San Luis Valley residents are facing a combined 173 charges related to street racing.

Over the span of 10 months, authorities were able to gather evidence including videos posted on social media by the suspects proving that they were street racing down local county roads. One video posted included suspects filming their speedometer while driving up to 165 mph.

    Those facing charges include:

    Karl Kloeppel, 32
    Shadoe Amaya, 27
    Matthew Jacques, 28
    Fabian Quezada, 21
    Corey Lydeen,19
    Don Marvin Sisneros, 21
    Derek Blackburn, 40
    Adam Jacques. 30
The charges include Illegal Speed Contest, Illegal Speed Exhibition, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangerment.

Around 557 people have lost their lives on Colorado Highways in 2016 as a result of automobile accidents, many caused by speeding, according to CSP.

*disclaimer - I dont know how close these guys are to tracks or whatnot*

While I am all for taking "street racing" off the roads, how about have some avenue to run our cars? I just found out last night the "big track" in Alberta went NHRA and rumor has it you need a bar under 11.5 now.... Calgary had its local track demolished years ago with the promise we were getting a new one and every new plan has been shot down since then.

Its disappointing that people focus so much effort on punishing people rather then trying to fix the problem. I know you will never get 100% of the guys/girls to stop street racing, but honestly after hearing about the track that I have to drive 600km to go to just to safely race changing their rules that would require a bar in my car my immediate reaction was "guess ill be going to mexico on the weekend". Not proud of that, but its the truth.

They're mostly from Alamosa. I've actually run with a few of these guys before. It's about an hour and forty-five minutes to the nearest track from there.

I think if they open more tracks yes but most are 1/4 mile what happen a full mile i do think they need to open abandon air strips and have a time like till 12am race at your own risk and have paper work like when you go sky diving that will clear up a lot more than a lot of room to mess up

track night in america sponsored by the SCCA is running a special $100 bucks and you get membership in the scca as well. Really good deal, and they run a good show as it is a lot of people that are track virgins.

I'll leave the comments on street racing to myself......

Don't really like seeing shit like this. They always throw that fatality stat on street racing articles. Street racing itself kills very few people.

A couple of years ago I attended the funerals of a friend of mine, a Navy LT and his wife, a 2nd grade teacher who were collateral damage of a couple of street racing assfucks. Feel free to tell their 2 children, 2 and 4 at the time, that street racing isn't dangerous.

Last year I got to go to the funeral of a family friend who got killed because he had the nerve to walk out into his driveway to bring in his garbage can rather than giving a couple of street racing assholes a place to crash safely.

...but...but... I only do it with nobody around! I make sure it's safe! Bullshit. You want to race? Man up and go to a track. There are only about a gazillion drag strips, road courses, 1 mile events, or any other type of event you want out there to enter. Anybody who feels the need to go racing down the street can go eat a fat donkey's asshole as far as I'm concerned.

I am not one who endorses street racing, however with many track closed that leaves even fewer options for people to go and run. Sometimes the nearest is a few hrs away, and the ones you get to get pricey and minimal runs (have been to a track and spent about $50 iirc, and was able to run 1 time in 4hrs due to how busy it was.). Would be nice if there were more outlets for people to run, such as a police/town sponsored night of racing on a section of road they close off.

Would be nice if there were more outlets for people to run, such as a police/town sponsored night of racing on a section of road they close off.

Police/town sponsored ? Never happen due to liability. If you look hard enough you can find events, there are events for everyone, solo, autocross, you name it. I agree with what Botch said, if you want to race do it right and go to an event where there are 'rules' so everyone can have fun and go home in one piece. This is one of the few forums where a street racing thread is allowed, as most don't. (one of the reasons I like this forum is that most anything goes, hat tip to the mods) And I hesitate to put "racing" in street racing as well.

I'm not one to endorse street racing per se, but I am inclined to agree with Lbar here- the "Around 557 people have lost their lives on Colorado Highways in 2016 as a result of automobile accidents, many caused by speeding, according to CSP" is intentionally misleading, IMO.

According to CDOT, there were 607 motor vehicle fatalities in CO in 2016. 190 of which were 'suspected impairment fatalities'. Of course, that 190 figure is almost assuredly not mutually exclusive to 'racing fatalities', but still. I'm actually surprised they didn't add a slide for a speeding-esque figure.

That's no reason to 'justify' street racing per se, and I suspect it has little to no bearing on who will street race, nor how or why. Just a little devil's advocacy for Lbar's specific comment.

On the other side of the coin, do you have any tips for those of use who may be interested in finding such events? I've been googling 'racing' 'raceway' etc in our state but it can be a bit of a chore to sort out which are paved/dirt/sand/etc, then which have events where a DD like car could participate, etc.
