    Deep scratch/dent repair

My bad luck struck again and I ended up losing a front right tire to a pothole. Took the car out of commission immediately and I ended up having to get it towed home. The driver of the tow truck had a very hard time loading up my car and was getting very frustrated. He ended up having to jack it up and move it inch by inch onto the bed. Which is what brings me here, upon getting a closer look at my car, there are three deep gouges and dents where the Jack handle hit the side of the door. It is definitely past the clear coat and maybe into the bare metal past the paint.

Any bodywork experts out there have any ideas on the best way to get this taken care of? I did not take any pictures of the car before it was towed, so I don't know if i would be able to go after the towing company.

    Thanks,
    Eric

Sad to see what dumb tow truck drivers can do.
I would first go to the tow company office with your car and explain what happened. They may admit to it and agree to pay for the damage.
If they don't help you contact your insurance company. The damage is comprehensive damage. Give your insurance company all the information about the tow company and how it happened. Your insurance will go after the tow company and try to recover your deductible.
You need to repair and paint your front door and have the left front fender blended to match. I would also check your Rocker Molding and floor for damage from that floor jack!
    Good Luck!

After getting the run around a few times, I finally managed to talk with the owner of the towing company to show him the damages. He was trying to fight my story at first but once I showed him pictures of the Jack resting against the car, that closed my case. He recommended a body shop at a dealership for me to go to and told me to send him the repair bill.

I stopped by today to let the guy look over the damages and get an estimate wrote up. (He was also a fellow V owner, which was nice to know). He said he would pull the dents with a stud welder (which means no half-ass bondo fix) and he would have to repaint the front doors also.

The jack the driver used was low profile, no scratches underneath and it was placed under the frame rail every time.

Great to hear the tow owner is taking responsibility. Did he see the estimate? Don't be surprised if he calls his insurance company when he finds out how much $ to fix.

The estimate hasn't been drawn up yet. I managed to get there shortly before they closed, I should hear back from him tomorrow.

I also told them I'd need a rental or a loaner from the dealership while mine is being fixed. I can only hope it would be something comparable to my car and not a Kia Rio, etc etc. It's at a Lincoln dealer, I'd be alright with a new MKZ for a while.

Hope all goes well. The dealer should give you something nice since they are making money on your job. Ask for a v6 twin turbo MKZ.

Hate to hear that! But definitely glad you gave them a call and it sounds like it's getting taken care of.

It makes my blood boil when people damage someone else's car. I'm glad you are getting it fixed, but it's still ridiculous that you can't have nice things because other people are lazy.

I just wonder how bad it would've been if I wasn't there watching to make sure he didnt mess anything up... my front splitter drug the ground a little before he broke the jack out, but they are junk and bent down anyways.

Got the quote, $800 worth of damage, plus whatever they plan on doing for a rental.

$800 to paint one door. Wow that seems a little harsh.

They are have to paint all 4 doors. Both rear doors had damage. They have to paint the front doors also so the color will match and blend. If he only painted the rears, it would be a very noticeable difference.

From your original post, I thought the type of body man you were looking for was the kind that would dispose of the tow truck driver's body.

$800 to repair & paint all 4 doors seems low. Make sure they remove all trim, mirrors & door handles.

The guy at the body shop and the tow owner are close friends, which is probably why he wanted me to go there to keep costs down. But on my end, I'm worried about the quality of work, knowing "you get what you pay for" goes a long way especially on body work. Even more so when the guy has a conflict of interest of sorts with the one doing the repairs. But, both of them were very professional, the body shop guy showed me some pictures of cars that he had done, which looked very nice, but they can be deceiving.

My plan is to swing by a couple more shops here in town to get some more estimates just to have with me. And if it turns out looking like garbage after its done, I won't stop til they make it right.

Behold....... the loaner car they gave me....

This thing is a turd. No A/C, brakes go to the floor, barely gets up to highway speeds and when it does, it's squirrely and all over the road. Not to mention it creaks, cranks, bangs and pops anytime it moves. And almost forgot to mention the dash is lit up like a Christmas tree. ABS, CEL, Brake, etc etc... and of course the tow owner dodged out on me before I got there so I couldn't talk to him.

There would be no way I would have accepted that as a loaner.

I have a spare vehicle I was planning on driving anyways. But the drive home did piss me off because of how much of a junk pile it was.... if they would've told me that it was gonna take more than a few days, I would've told them to get me something else. But they said they would be able to get it in right away and get it taken care of.

I would have asked for another vehicle, or a ride home. I wouldn't drive that death trap. I hope the repair quality is better than the loaner quality...

Should find out after work. They said it was getting painted today and should be finished by the time I get off. If it's not right, I'll be in a rental while they paint the whole car to match.

Well its home. Looks like a slight color difference on the drivers side, but hard to tell due to the rain and lighting. Could also chock that up to being new paint. No wax or scrubbing for a month or so. I'm hoping after it gets a little weathered, it'll match better.

Repair looked ok, passenger side has a slight wave when really looking for it. But overall not bad.

They gave it a good bath and really did a number on my rims in terms of bringing them back to life. Brake dust definitely took a toll on them over the years combined with lack of cleaning made it near impossible to scrub off. They gave them an acid wash and a lot of elbow grease to make them look really nice.

On a side note, I go to return the turd, and get a bath pulling out of the driveway from water pooling up on the headliner from a roof leak somewhere... not to mention whenever I hit the brakes, the airbag light would start flashing. It was like a grown up version of a jack in the box.. wondering which time would be the one to set it off.... I'm so glad that pos is out of my driveway.

Oh I do. And everything was exactly how I left it. Odometer and all. I had that worry in the back of my head that they would pull a Ferris Bueller and go for joy rides.

Silver isn't my first choice on car color, but I couldn't beat the price. I'd like to get it painted black but I doubt that will ever happen
